Welcome to the University of West Georgia Cataloging module.
The purpose of this work is to introduce you to proper use of Sears List of Subject Headings and Abridged Dewey Decimal Classification & Relative Index, Ed. 15, and to discuss classification of collections based on genre. It is a self-contained module with worksheets at CourseDen that will be scored by your professor. You may use print materials or the online databases. (Login information will be provided by your professor.)
A basic, overall understanding of cataloging and organization of collections is essential for the school library media specialist. Library users need an organized collection in order to locate specific materials. According to AASL national guidelines, Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs, "The school library media program includes a well-developed collection of books, periodicals, and non-print material in a variety of formats that support curricular topics and are suited to inquiry learning and users' needs and interests" (p.38). This module will provide introductory content on collection cataloging and organization.
