Dewey numbers are not assigned based on TOPIC, but rather on how the topic is TREATED.
The 10 Main Classes of Dewey are divided into broad subjects with numbers based on TREATMENT OF A TOPIC. Determining the main class of a work is the first step to take when classifying --- this is best done by choosing "BROWSE" the "RELATIVE INDEX" in the WebDewey database.

USE IT after you first search the database to get the most appropriate major discipline number (000's, 100's, 200's, 300's, 400's, 500's, 600's, 700's, 800's, or 900's)
